Chapter Ten

Kapheri ignored Ruben and walked into a kitchen. He stopped when he spotted the two men seated at a table as Alani Blaecleah served them some food. From the way she’d been acting, he would have expected their heads to be sitting on a platter.

“Hungry?” she asked Kapheri as she wiped her hands on her apron. “There’s plenty.”

“I am not hungry,” Kapheri replied with a small nod of his head, “but thank you for offering.”

The red head looked up at Kapheri and then quickly glanced away, staring out the large bay window.

“This is my brother, Daley, and my nephew, Brennan,” Ma said to Kapheri. “Say hello to them now because they won’t be staying.”

“Come on now, Alani,” Daley said. “You can at least board us overnight before we return home. We had a long flight to get here.”

“You’ve delivered your news. If you must stay the night, Donnell can find you a place in the barn.” The smile on Ma’s face as she turned to hand Kapheri a porcelain saucer with a cup of tea on it was totally at odds with the glares she sent her brother and nephew. “Please, give this to your mother.”

Kapheri was shocked that she was being so polite to him and ready to put her own family out.

“I’m going to talk to Donnell. Maybe he can listen to reason,” Daley said, and stood. “Stay here, Brennan.”

Kapheri saw the relieved look on Brennan’s face as his father stormed out. Kapheri was still shaking his head when left the kitchen and took the tea to his mother. She was talking to Alani, bouncing the child on her knee. He set the cup on a small table next to her and kissed his mother’s temple. “I am in the kitchen. If you need me, just call my name.”

She smiled at him. “I am fine, son.”

He stroked a loose tendril of her hair and then returned to the kitchen.

“I’m going to get Billy situated,” Ma said. “Can you keep Brennan company?”

He started to tell her that he was not a babysitter, but Kapheri had never disrespected a woman in his life. As confused as he was by the woman’s behavior, he wasn’t going to start now. “If it pleases you.”

She smiled, and Kapheri felt as if he’d just been given approval by an angel. “You’re a good boy, Kapheri.”

He was stunned when he felt himself blush. Kapheri did not blush. She patted his arm and left. He stood there for a moment and stared at where she’d walked out and then shook his head.

“She’s one hell of a woman,” Brennan said from the table. “From what I hear, she can scare a bear into tap dancing.”

Kapheri wasn’t sure what that meant. He was also just as sure it was true. “You shouldn’t curse. It is unbecoming.”

Brennan was now openly assessing Kapheri. The man turned in his seat and tossed his arm over the back.
